Job Description:	1741 Historic Iron Furnace has the typical swelled walls due to a previous repointing performed using a 1:2:9 mortar mix that held massive amounts of water in the nine foot thick stone walling. deGruchy Masonry removed the Portland containing mortar and allowed water to ooze out for weeks. We repointed in St. Astier NHL 3.5 and sand and the mortar took days to set up. We were worried. However, what was happening was a very slow cure which miraculously allowed all the trapped moisture to evaporate though the joints and completely dry out the structure while the newly installed lime mortar joints finally reached their desired strength and durability. Most importantly liquid and vapor permeability was installed. Is your brick or stone building raining inside?....have us check the mortar on the outside. If it was repointed it most likely was a Portland cement based mix and needs to renewed with the right performing pure lime/sand mortar.
